A grounded, steady presence for birth, postpartum, and early parenthood

Early parenthood is one of the most tender transitions a family will ever experience. It’s a time full of intensity, beauty, vulnerability, and profound change. My work exists to meet families right in the middle of that with steadiness, warmth, and a deep respect for the complexity of this season.

I’m Nikki - a Birth and Postpartum Doula based in Ottawa, ON. I have a background in Early Childhood Education, and I’ve spent years supporting families in a variety of ways and at different stages. My background, along with my own experience as a parent, shapes everything I do: the way I listen, the way I support, and the way I help families understand their babies and themselves.

My own journey into parenthood

Even with all my training, experience, and knowledge, becoming a parent shook me in ways I never expected. I knew the theory. I understood child development. I thought I was more than ready. And still, when my daughter was born, I was thrown into a state of constant anxiety and overwhelm, unable to experience new parenthood the way that I had envisioned it.

I struggled to let in support, even when I needed it. I tried to hold everything together on my own, believing I “should” be able to manage because of my background. By the time I had my second baby a few years later, I am happy to say that I had a completely different experience (though I did still experience Postpartum Anxiety), and was able to let my people in, to accept help and let myself feel supported and loved.

My early postpartum experiences were both challenging, but I am so grateful for them. They softened me. They made me more attuned to the invisible layers of the transition into parenthood: the emotional undercurrents, the identity shifts, the quiet fears, the longing to feel capable and connected. It was becoming a parent that ultimately led me to doula work. I share my story because I know what it feels like to be in the thick of it, and how hard it can be to reach out. I also know how transformative it is to have someone beside you who sees you, supports you, and honours your pace.
